Marketing Key Terms and Concepts

If you are new to marketing or just need a refresher, this glossary covers the essentials. Plus, a few real-world lessons I’ve picked up along the way.

Branding is how you give your business its own personality, style, and vibe.

Good advertising doesn’t just sell, it makes people stop, look, and remember.

SEO is the quiet workhorse that gets you seen when your customers are searching.

Data never lies. Analytics tells you what’s working, what’s not, and where to double down.

BRANDING

Early in my career, I was obsessed with the visuals – logos, fonts, colors, taglines. I thought that was branding. And to be fair, those things still matter. But one of my first mentors, an old-school agency guy who’d worked with everyone from corner barbers to national retail chains, gave it to me straight.

He said, “People don’t remember brands because of how they look. They remember how a brand makes them feel.” Since then, I’ve had the chance to work with businesses that were barely known outside their street, and help shape them into names people recognized, trusted, and talked about.

We focused on what made them different. What they believed in. What their customers believed in too. That’s branding. It’s the heart of the business, and when you get it right, people don’t just buy from you. They remember you. They come back. And they bring others with them.

A few years ago, I worked with a small fitness brand trying to break into a crowded market. Their ads had the right keywords, the budget was solid, but nothing was working. People were scrolling right past. So I went back to the basics: why did they start this business?

Turned out, the founder had transformed his own life through fitness after an injury. That was the story. That’s what people needed to see. We scrapped the generic headlines and stock photos. Instead, we built a campaign around real people, real setbacks, real wins. The ad was honest.

And that one simple change? It tripled their engagement and brought in the kind of loyal customers a business dreams of. That’s the beauty of advertising. When it’s done right, it doesn’t feel like an ad. It feels like a conversation that hits home, and that’s when people listen.

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION

I used to roll my eyes at SEO. Honestly, I thought it was just tech-speak for “add some keywords and hope for the best.” But then came the turning point, one of my clients had a killer product lineup, but their site was buried on page three of Google. No traffic. No sales. We didn’t change the product. We changed the strategy.

I spent weeks digging into their content, fixing what needed fixing – headlines, meta descriptions, structure, the whole nine yards. Within a couple of months, their blog posts started ranking. That’s when it clicked. SEO isn’t just about pleasing algorithms. It’s about making your content visible to real people who are actually searching for it.

There was this one campaign I worked on that just felt off. We’d poured weeks into it but the numbers were still flat. No clicks. No conversions. Nothing. So, I dove headfirst into the analytics, determined to figure out where we went wrong. And there it was. Users were bouncing halfway through the landing page.

Turns out, what we thought was engaging was actually just overwhelming. We stripped things back, reworked the layout, tweaked the messaging, and launched again. Within a week, engagement doubled. Not because we guessed better, but because we listened to the data, to the behavior, to what people were actually doing. That’s the power of analytics.
